Keep companion pets out of the shelters. Learn more below from our 2023 campaign!
Our 2024 Pet Food Drive is Here and We Couldn't Be More Excited! Each year, since 2008, we have collected pet food to provide for the companion pets of the seniors and homebound individuals who receive Meals on Wheels. Try to imagine being a senior or homebound individual who has to make the decision to buy groceries (medicine, electric, doctor's bills) for him or herself, or buy pet food for their furry companion. No one should have to make that choice. In our home, we believe pets are family. We can't imagine a life without our precious dog and cat companions. The same is true for the folks who receive Meals on Wheels. Thankfully, Feed More has their Meals for Pets program, which provides nutritious meals for the pets of Meals on Wheels' recipients. Currently they provide pet meals for 207 pets - 105 cats, 99 dogs, and 5 birds. By purchasing pet food through our Amazon Wish List, you'll ensure that companion pets, sometimes a senior or homebound individual's only family member, will stay well fed. It's a win-win for the pets, and the people who love them. Let's keep companion pets out of the shelters and where they belong - at home. EXCITING NEWS!!! This year, we can offer both online shopping through our Amazon Wish List, or for those who prefer a brick and mortar experience, we have partnered with an amazing local pet store, PJ Petts in Tuckahoe. When you shop for pet food at PJ Petts, they will discount full-price bags and cans of pet food to be donated to our pet food drive by 10%. That's incredible! Want to hear something else incredible? We've had the great fortune to have Jay and Susan Johnson, owners of Richmond E-Z Box Storage, provide us with an on-site storage unit, making it easier on us, and our wonderful Amazon delivery drivers. All your donations will be securely stored until donated. Thank you for your support. It means the world to us.
Visit the Amazon Wish List link by clicking the "Donate Now" button below to purchase pet food, treats and toys to be donated to Feed More's Meals for Pets Program. Or, shop local and visit PJ Petts in Tuckahoe to purchase bags of dry dog and cat food, or cans/containers of wet food that have pop tops.
Feed More serves around 1269 human clients on any given day in 2024, in and around Richmond, VA.
They also have 105 cats, 99 dogs and 5 birds that are served currently.
"The Meals on Wheels For Pets program enables Feed More to provide pet food and other necessary services to ease some of that burden and make it possible for local seniors and their beloved pets to stay together.”
Bags of dry dog and cat food,
or cans with easy-open tops are needed to ensure that these pets, sometimes a senior or homebound individual’s only companion, will receive the same nutritious meals from Meals on Wheels as their owners do.
Most pets, if fortunate enough, eat twice a day. That amounts to 414 meals a day, or over 12,000 meals a month. All of that pet food needs to come from donations. That's a lot of pet food we need to collect!
Cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Richmond and Petersburg, Counties of Henrico, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Louisa, Prince George, Powhatan, New Kent and Charles City.
Based on evidence that companion animals improve the mental and physical well-being of seniors/homebound, Meals on Wheels America officially began supporting pet assistance services in 2007.
Come along as we deliver all the food you helped us collect!
We believe strongly in helping others and part of our mission is supporting charities we feel have made a difference in the lives of people and pets. Since 2008, we have been holding annual and sometimes biannual pet food drives to benefit the pets of Feed More's Meals on Wheels' recipients. Feed More's Meals for Pets program keeps pets in the homes of seniors and shut-ins by providing the same nutritious meals for pets as it does for their human recipients. The pet food pantry is always in need. In 2023, with support from this amazing pet-loving community, we collected 2957 pounds of pet food which was donated to Feed More.
We also supported the Richmond SPCA and raised over $2800 in 2021 with our Over The Edge campaign and fund-raising event at Common House. Did you know it costs about $370 on average (2021) to care for each pet who enters Richmond SPCA's shelter before they are adopted? The SPCA also offers low cost spay and neuter, as well as reduced cost veterinary services. By doing so, they are helping people and pets in our community. We also supported them in 2024, as the RVA Dog Pack, our community group. We raised almost $1,600 to help animals in need.
Our cats, Pete, Ernie, and our newest, Little Man, got their start at Richmond Animal Care and Control. The RACC Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to supporting the agency's success. Our kittens received nutritious meals in their foster home, were tested for infectious diseases, got all their shots, and were even neutered for a low adoption fee. We help RACC now by "virtually fostering" a pet, a new initiative to help get shelter pets adopted. We post the fosters on our social media pages helping spread the word, and encouraging others to do so, until that pet finds their forever home. Check out our newest virtual fosters on our Facebook page Home Is Where The Dog Is RVA.
Serving Through Our Business
We like to serve our community through our real estate services, too. We understand that buying or selling a home is more than just a transaction: it’s a life-changing experience and that’s what it is meant to be. We believe, both professionally and personally, that there is nothing better than owning a home. Making your home your own, with your favorite things and then making memories to last a lifetime, with family, pets, and friends, is what it’s all about.
Each month we invite RVA's dog-loving community to join us for a pack walk at one of our Richmond area public parks. The walks have not only been great for our dog, Bunny, but for the people in attendance, too. It's a great way to connect and make new friends and the dogs are learning much needed socialization skills. Want to join us for a stroll? Visit the link below to check out our next walk.
We'd love to help!
